Planning to work, study or living with family in Taiwan? A Taiwan Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) allows foreign nationals to stay in Taiwan for up to 5 years. The duration of your stay will depend on your ARC type. To obtain an ARC in Taiwan, you typically need to follow these steps:
Step 1: Obtain a valid visa and arrive in Taiwan
Before applying for an ARC, you need to enter Taiwan with a valid visa. The most common types of visas for employment or study include work visas, student visas, and dependent visas. It's important to check the specific requirements and eligibility criteria for the visa category that applies to your situation. Once you arrive in Taiwan with your valid visa, you will need to complete the arrival procedures at the airport or port of entry.
Step 2: Prepare required documents and photo
Passport (valid for at least 6 months) with resident visa (How to apply).
Proof of reason for residency:
Joining family: Proof of family relationship (such as birth certificate, marriage certificate, and more).
Work and investment:
Employment: Letter of approval issued by the competent authority of the industry concerned and an in-service certificate issued within one month.
In charge of a foreign company in Taiwan: Letter of approval from the MOEA Department of Commerce, and registration form of the company.
Investment: Letter of approval from the MOEA Investment Commission or other competent authority (issued within three months), company registration form, and list of directors and supervisors.
Study:
Attending school: Student card or certification of student status issued within one month
Learning Mandarin Chinese: Proof of enrollment and attendance record for the most recent semester.
Missionary work: The religious organization’s registration certification and a letter of invitation or related document issued by the religious organization in Taiwan.

Step 3: Submit application and fee
Submit your application to local National Immigration Agency (NIA) service center. The fee ranges from NT$1,000 to $5,000, based on years of validity. The processing time for the ARC application can vary, but it usually takes 2-3 weeks (10 working days). During this time, your employer or school may provide you with a temporary ARC-like document called a "provisional ARC" that allows you to legally reside and work or study in Taiwan.
Step 4: ARC Collection
Once your ARC application is approved, you will be notified to collect your ARC card from the NIA office. This card serves as your identification and residence permit in Taiwan. 🎉
It's important to note that the process and requirements for obtaining an ARC may be subject to change. Remember to check the official website of the National Immigration Agency, or consult with your employer, school, or a professional immigration service for the most up-to-date and accurate information specific to your situation.
